Anyone who has rehabbed an injury knows how it tends to end. The pain settles, the appointments stop, and somebody tells you to “ease back into it.” Then you’re on your own, standing in a gym, wondering what that even means.
Functional Strength & Therapy (everyone calls it FST) exists for that moment. It’s a clinic and a gym sharing one roof in Stouffville, and the team’s own tagline pretty much says it all: 50% sports clinic, 50% training facility, 100% invested in you.
This year the community gave them plenty to celebrate. FST earned recognition in 15 categories at the 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards.
FST’s clinic took Diamond recognition in Best Holistic / Alternative Medicine / Healing, Best Massage Therapy and Best Medical / Health Clinic. Platinum went to Best Acupuncture and Best Chiropractic Clinic, and Gold to Best Physiotherapy Clinic / Services. Two people on the team were recognized by name as well. Dave Wilkins earned Diamond in Best Registered Massage Therapist, and Dr. Victoria West earned Platinum in Best Chiropractor.
The gym held its own. Best Overall Business Sports, Recreation & Fitness, Best Personal Training and Best Recreation Facility all came in at Platinum, while Best Fitness Class / Instruction and Best Fitness Club earned Gold. And for the business as a whole, FST received Diamond recognition in Best Customer Service and Best Overall Business Service.
Functional Strength & Therapy is owned by Dave Wilkins and Chelsea Gervan, and the place runs on a simple belief: expert care and world-class training belong together. On the clinic side, that means registered massage therapists (Dave is one of them), chiropractors, a physiotherapist and, new this year, a 1:1 nutrition coach. In the gym, personal trainers and group class instructors lead the sessions.
Treatment is hands-on. Registered massage therapy addresses everything from everyday tension to sport-specific injuries. Chiropractors do adjustments, soft tissue work, acupuncture, and cupping, and they’re just as keen to explain what’s going on so patients can take charge of their own recovery. Long-term results, not quick fixes, is how they put it. Physiotherapy rounds out the clinic side, leaning on manual therapy, dry needling and corrective exercise. New this year, the team also offers 1:1 nutrition coaching and fascial stretch therapy, along with shockwave therapy and laser therapy.
One service worth knowing about is the functional range assessment. It measures how many degrees of motion you have in your shoulder, hips, knee, elbow, wrist, ankle, toes, and spine, then checks whether that’s enough to get through your daily tasks and workouts safely. If a joint comes up short, the team builds a program to open it up.
Then there’s the gym, attached right to the clinic and open to everyone. Personal training and group fitness classes anchor the schedule, backed by barbells, bumper plates, power racks, sled and turf, and a reverse-hyper of Westside Barbell fame. Private coaches, dry land and team training, school workshops, drop-ins it’s all here. Powerlifters, yogis, endurance athletes, new moms, and retirees are all welcome, and the atmosphere has a real community feel. Stop by for a no-pressure walkthrough and judge for yourself.
